Why we usually recommend Shopify over Wix for Bulgarian online stores

Designer comparing Shopify and Wix Studio interfaces on two laptops in a Sofia studio

Both platforms can build a clean Bulgarian e-commerce site. Only one of them keeps getting easier to run after launch.

Key takeaways

  • Shopify is our default recommendation for most Bulgarian online stores. Two reasons: a cleaner admin UI and a much deeper integration ecosystem.

  • Wix Studio is still a smart pick for content-led sites that happen to sell, or for tiny catalogs where the integrations don’t matter yet.

  • The platform decision is mostly about what you’ll plug into it: payments, couriers, email, reviews, accounting. Shopify has more of these built or one-click ready.

When a Bulgarian client asks us "Wix or Shopify?", we usually recommend Shopify. Not because Wix can’t build a good-looking store. It can. The deciding factor is how each platform plays with the rest of your stack: payments, couriers, email marketing, reviews, accounting, ads. Shopify has a deeper bench, and its admin UI is faster to learn.

Why this matters

A Bulgarian e-commerce site rarely lives alone. By month three you’re plugging in Mailchimp or Klaviyo for email, a reviews app, a courier integration with Econt or Speedy, an accounting export to your accountant, sometimes a wholesale portal or a loyalty program. The platform you start on decides how painful each of those becomes.

Pick wrong and every "small" addition turns into a 2-week project. Pick right and most integrations are one-click.

The integration ecosystem is the real difference

Shopify’s app store has roughly 8,000 apps as of Q2 2026. Wix App Market has about 500. The raw count is one thing. The bigger gap is depth. Every meaningful tool we plug into Bulgarian e-commerce stores has a maintained, polished Shopify app: Klaviyo, Mailchimp, Brevo, Loox, Judge.me, Recharge, Yotpo, Smile.io, Stamped, ReConvert, Econt’s native Shopify app (live since 2024), Speedy’s API connector.

On Wix, you’ll find most of the big names too. But the integrations are often thinner. They sync fewer fields, break more often on platform updates, and lag behind on new features. Reviews apps are a clear example: Loox’s Wix version doesn’t support photo carousels in collection pages the way the Shopify version does, and Klaviyo’s Wix integration syncs about 60% of what its Shopify integration syncs.

If you plan to add even three or four tools beyond the basics, Shopify saves you weekly headaches.

The admin UI difference

Shopify’s admin is built around running a store. Orders, products, customers, analytics - each one is a top-level tab with consistent layouts. We’ve onboarded Bulgarian clients who never touched e-commerce before, and they’re fulfilling orders confidently inside a week.

Wix Studio’s admin is split across the site editor and a separate dashboard, which works but has a steeper ramp. Day-one tasks like "edit my homepage" and "view my orders" live in different mental spaces. For founders without a tech background, that split matters.

When Wix Studio actually wins

It’s not all one-sided. Wix Studio is our pick when the site is content-led and selling is secondary. Think: a Bulgarian wine estate with a beautiful brand story page, a small online shop attached, plus an events booking module. Wix’s editor gives more design freedom out of the box. Shopify themes feel templated by comparison.

We also pick Wix for tiny catalogs (under 50 SKUs) where the cost difference matters more than the integration depth. A Bulgarian artisan with 20 products and no plans to scale rarely needs Shopify’s ecosystem.

The rule we use: if the brand has any plan to add 3+ integrations in year one, Shopify. If it’s a content site with a small shop attached, Wix Studio.

How a recent Bulgarian client made this call

A Bulgarian skincare brand came to us in early 2025 already on Wix, doing about €80K per year. They wanted to add Klaviyo for email, Loox for reviews, a loyalty program, and a wholesale portal in the next 12 months. We migrated them to Shopify Basic over 5 weeks.

The numbers six months in: Klaviyo synced cleanly with full purchase data (which the Wix version had been missing). Loox brought in photo reviews that lifted product page conversion by about 19%. The wholesale portal launched in 2 weeks instead of the 6 they’d quoted on Wix. Total integration spend dropped from €240 per month on Wix (with three half-broken apps) to €185 per month on Shopify (with all four apps running properly).

The platform fee was almost identical. The difference was everything around it.

Frequently asked questions

Does Shopify work with Bulgarian couriers like Econt and Speedy?

Yes. Econt released a native Shopify app in 2024 that handles label printing and tracking. Speedy works via a third-party connector that has been stable for the brands we manage. Both cost between €10 and €25 per month per app.

Is Wix cheaper than Shopify for a small Bulgarian store?

The platform fees are close: Wix Business is around €26 per month, Shopify Basic is around €32. The real cost difference shows up in apps. Wix apps tend to be slightly cheaper but you’ll need more of them to do the same job, so the total often evens out by month six.

Can I migrate from Wix to Shopify without losing SEO?

Yes if you set up 301 redirects properly. We’ve done about a dozen Wix to Shopify migrations for Bulgarian brands and never lost more than 5 to 8% of organic traffic in the first 30 days, with full recovery inside 90 days.

What about WooCommerce?

WooCommerce looks cheaper until you count your own time on plugin conflicts, security updates, and hosting management. For Bulgarian SMEs without an in-house developer, the long-term cost is higher than either Shopify or Wix. We rarely recommend it.

What to do this week

  1. Make a list of every tool you plan to plug into your store in the next 12 months: email, reviews, loyalty, accounting, couriers, ads. If the list has 4+ items, Shopify will save you time.

  2. Check whether the specific apps you want exist on both platforms and compare what each one actually syncs. Brand names match. Feature parity often doesn’t.

  3. If you’re on Wix today and feeling integration pain, get a migration quote before you commit another year of subscriptions.
